CET has received a patent for the smart helmet technology that can ensure vehicle safety from the Central government. This innovation will be an asset to the motor vehicle segment in today’s smart era. Three B. Tech students, Athira U.V, Athira Resmi N, and Athira A., from the 2016 ECE Batch at the College of Engineering Trivandrum, have secured a patent for their innovative creation. Under the guidance of Dr. Sivakumar R from the ECE department, they have developed a smart helmet that enhances road safety through the integration of a helmet-mounted alcohol detection unit with an RF-based police verification system. This innovative system simplifies traffic checks while promoting responsible riding.
In this set-up, riders wear a specially designed helmet that enables the vehicle to start only when the helmet is worn. Additionally, the helmet is equipped with a built-in gas sensor, causing the motorcycle’s engine to automatically shut down when alcohol is detected, thereby preventing further travel. This innovative system is also integrated with an RF communication channel that transmits a unique identification signal to nearby law enforcement devices, which signals that the user is wearing this particular type of helmet. This feature not only eliminates the need for officers to stop every vehicle for helmet and alcohol checks but also keeps traffic flowing smoothly
