Student Chapter , CET TVM

There is always a gap that exists between what one learns from textbooks, and what one comes to experience, once out in the real world. It is this gap that often makes our young engineers unemployable. With the advent of Student chapters from colleges offering an industry level platform, this gap can be minimized.
Non-Destructive Testing is a wide group of analysis techniques used in Science and Technology industry to evaluate the properties of a material, component or system, without causing damage. It has wide aspects in civil, mechanical, forensic, electrical, aeronautical, medical and even in the fields of art and archaeology. There are various national and international organisations working in order to make these technologies accessible and understandable to each and every person working in the industry. ISNT Trivandrum chapter was formed with the same agenda. The student chapter of ISNT Trivandrum, CET chapter currently boasts of around 150 members, across disciplines, including both undergraduate and post graduate students. CET Trivandrum is a life-time corporate member of ISNT Trivandrum chapter.
The ISNT student chapter at CET was formally inaugurated by Dr. J. David, Principal of CET, on the 17th of August, 2017, in the presence of Sri. G. Levin, chairman of ISNT Trivandrum Chapter and other executive members of ISNT Trivandrum Chapter. The function marked the beginning of a number of activities and workshops that were about to follow.
With joint collaboration between Civil and Mechanical departments of the college, various programmes have been conducted under the banner of ISNT.
A one-day workshop on NDT was conducted on September 16th, 2017, at CET Trivandrum, with joint collaboration from ISNT Trivandrum chapter and GEC Barton Hill.
Sri. M. Arumugam, Vice Chairman, ISNT Trivandrum Chapter and Sri. G. Levin, Chairman, ISNT Trivandrum Chapter presided the event. A lecture on “NDE and its significance on Quality control” was delivered by Er. S. Saratchandran, GD-QRMG, VSSC. A lecture on
“Career Prospects and Certification in NDE” was delivered by Er. KRM Ananthanarayanan, Head-QDMC, VSSC.
On 26th October, 2017, a technical lecture on “Pyro Devices for Space: Applications of NDT”, was conducted at the Trivandrum Hotel, organized by the Young Engineers forum of ISNT Trivandrum Chapter. The talk was attended by the PG student members of CET chapter, and received much appreciation.
Undoubtedly, Non Destructive Testing remains as a very promising area of research in today’s and tomorrow’s world. With the students getting opportunities to mingle up close with scientists from prestigious organisations like VSSC, ISNT aims to bring their fresh mindsets into the field. We wish to see student projects in both Btech and Mtech levels that cross the boundaries of disciplines and have industry level applications.
The field trip on 13th January 2018 was the first one conducted under the ISNT CET Chapter. It was a visit to the water treatment plant at Aruvikkara, under the Kerala Water Authority. The students were shown not only the steps involved in the treatment process, but also given a tour of the entire plant. It was a very informative and rare opportunity for the students to look into the intricate details of a water treatment plant.
On 23rd March, 2018 the students of ISNT CET Chapter had the privilege of visiting the Nuclear Power Plant at Kudankulam. They were accompanied by the Principal, Dr. J.David and other faculty members. It was an excellent opportunity for the students to learn almost everything there is to know about Nuclear Fission and how it is used to harness energy safely.
More programmes and hands-on training sessions are being organized under the banner of ISNT.
